So… you’ve decided to start couponing?  Awesome!  Welcome to the hidden world of coupon clipping :-)   As you begin this adventure, having realistic expectations of what the coming months are going to bring can be helpful.  For instance, do you expect to collect a couple week’s worth of coupons, hit the stores and walk out with a cartful of freebies?  Or do you think you have to go to every store to see any sort of savings?  Do you think you can seamlessly change your current grocery shopping habits into using only coupons?  These types of unrealistic expectations can end your coupon “career” quickly… Here’s what you can really expect -

- The First Week -

To Do

- Set up a subscription for newspapers.  If available in your area, there is an order form link on the dashboard (homepage) of Coupon $ense.  For other areas, you can order online or start purchasing multiple sets of newspapers at your local grocery/convenience store.  (A good rule of thumb- one set of coupon inserts for each member of your family.)

– It is important to learn as much as you can in the beginning.  When you sign up with Coupon Sense, you will receive a series of Welcome emails, which include links to videos and taped or live webinars.  Take advantage of this info!

- Any questions?  Call/email your coach!  Their contact info is on the dashboard.

What to Expect

- Shop as you normally do, coupons are optional, but try to incorporate sales into your grocery list decisions.

- The First Month -

To Do

- Keep collecting coupons weekly.

– Set up an organization system.  Grab a box and some file folders, and organize your coupon inserts by type (Red Plum, Smart Source, etc) and date.

- Print off some internet coupons to use.

– Make a shopping list using Coupon Sense’s shopping list feature.

– Shop with some coupons!

What to Expect

- You are going to see some savings.  20-30% is great!

– Coupon shopping is based on cyclical sales, so there is no way to only coupon/sale shop right now.  Expect to shop the way you used to, while integrating the new coupon system.

– Stick to one store.  Don’t overwhelm yourself with trying to get EVERY deal.

- The Second Month -

To Do

- Get a little more in depth – check out the message boards on Coupon Sense.  Try a deal listed on the “Shopping Expert”.

- Expand your shopping radius.  Try doing a drugstore or add on an additional grocery store if you want.  Maybe try ad-matching and using coupons at a store that offers that service.

- Keep collecting those coupons weekly and filing by date.  Utilize Internet coupons!

- Don’t forget!  If you have any questions, contact your coach!

What to Expect

- Your savings are going to increase!  30-40% is fabulous!

- You will be getting a little more familiar with how each store handles coupons, and more comfortable with the coupon rules.

- Shopping is going to become more coupon oriented.  Some previous shopping habits will still need to be utilized, but for the most part, you should be concentrating on the sales and the coupons that go with them.

- The Third Month -

To Do

- Yep, same as before – keep collecting those coupons!

- If you choose, try pushing those savings limits!  Look into rebates, downloadable coupons (if available), etc.

- Push your savings percentage by making a menu, and work to utilize coupon items in that menu.

- Analyze your filing system.  Do you have loose coupons driving you crazy?  It might be a good idea to integrate a coupon binder into your system.  Simply get a three-ring binder and some baseball card holders.  Organize any loose or unused coupons by category in the binder.  Extra Internet coupons, catalinas, mailed coupons, etc. will be nicely organized and easy to find.

What to Expect

- You should have a full set of coupons by now – use it to your advantage!

- Coupon shopping and sales should be the primary way you shop now.

- You should have a good system in place for organizing and shopping.  You determine how many stores you visit or don’t. Tweak as necessary.

- Some week’s savings will be better than others… go with the flow.

- Everyone’s savings percentage will be different - Time, area, coupon availability and grocery stores will determine a large portion of your savings percentage.  Find the balance that works for you – and be proud of it!  50 – 60% savings is impressive!

Enjoy the process!  We all learn at different rates – take it one step at a time and don’t forget to ask for help!  Before you know it, you will be rocking those savings!  :)
